I watched the annular solar eclipse yesterday. At first I was using the hole punch method and tracing the crescent out on paper. Just before it started a random stranger handed me some viewing goggles. They blocked out the light so there was an immediate element of sensory deprivation, like stepping into a pitch dark room. The goggles left only the ring of fire over my head. The instant I put them on it was just me and The Eye of Sauron. Had I known it would have looked that amazing I would have sought out a pair before heading out. It didn't shake up or soldify my convictions or lack thereof about our cosmographical situation. The question is as interesting as ever.
According to classical tradition, Thales of Miletus predicted the total solar eclipse that took place on 28 May 585 BCE. Thales thought the Earth must be a flat disk or mound of land and dirt which is floating in an expanse of water. So there is that.
